Why Hire Us?

Many lawyers look at their clients as numbers only. I have devoted a quarter century representing people who have family law issues all over the state. I do it because I enjoy helping my clients. You are never treated as simply a ‘file’ or ‘case’. I understand you are a unique human being going through a stressful time. Perhaps you do not want the divorce but your spouse does. Or your spouse has engaged in behavior that hurts you and your family. Perhaps money is tight. These are very real problems. It is my job to try my hardest to make your life better and help you with your legal problems. I take this responsibility seriously.

I know the courts. I know the judges. I know the attorneys who practice in family court.
I see it all the time. A new lawyer walks into a court room and learns something ‘the hard way’. Unfortunately that lawyer’s learning just came at their client’s expense. I have the education, training and experience to help you avoid costly ‘learning experiences’. Further, while I primarily specialize in family matters, I have extensive practice experience in probate, civil, municipal and criminal court. Further, I have represented many corporations and individuals with their non-court related cases. Finally I have extensive real estate experience. Therefore, when your family case suddenly has a ‘corporate’ issue, or a ‘real estate’ issue, I am able to use my knowledge to help you immediately and without additional expense.

I have a philosophy and a perspective about family cases that helps clients. I believe strongly that you are the boss and I work for you. I make recommendations and lay out choices for you. However, this is your life and the major (non tactical) decisions are left to you. Further, I have observed hundreds of individuals make good choices and bad choices while going through their family case. Hopefully, I can share my feedback with you so that you can make the best choices for you. I believe that over the years I have helped many people avoid making huge errors as they worked their way to a successful new life. Avoiding these mistakes can save hundreds of thousands of dollars and, just as importantly, preserved parent-child relationships.

I come from a middle class background. I understand that you work hard for your money. Whenever possible I try to use ‘the path of least resistance’ to accomplish your goals. For example, if I can fix a problem with a phone call or email rather than a court hearing, I will do that. I can assure that this mindset is not common among all attorneys. Many see every issue as an excuse to spend your money. I want to fix your problems, not spend your money.

I simply do not like bullies. I will not back down from bullying spouses or attorneys. When your family needs protection, I am there to help. I will be loyal, determined, tough and effective.

When you hire me, you get my full attention. Sure, everyone has voicemail and assistants. However, if you need to speak to me or meet with me that will happen. I won’t constantly be ‘unavailable’ when you call. If I am in court or a meeting, I will call or email you as soon as I can every time.

Currently, there is no legal significance with respect to whether the Husband or the Wife files the Petition.

It is difficult to determine how long a divorcee proceeding will take. We are better able to give you an estimated time range later when we understand more clearly what is at issue. The time involved is primarily based on four factors.   (Read More)

It is difficult to make a realistic estimate of the total fee even when we know what issues are contested, the intensity of the parties’ feelings, and the complexity of the issues. If the parties want to settle, make compromises, and to end the matter quickly, they can do so. If the parties do not trust each other, want complete discovery of all assets and liabilities, and argue many issues to the bitter end, the process becomes very long, drawn out, and expensive. Going to trial is almost always more expensive than settling the lawsuit.    (Read More)
